Sports injury rehab for Santa Monica and Westside athletes

Sports rehabilitation picks up where pain relief leaves off. The goal is to get you back to your sport moving well, with the strength, control and confidence to handle full training.

At our Ocean Park Blvd clinic every session is one-to-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. We start from what your sport asks of your body and work back from there, so your program builds toward the sprints, cuts, tackles, jumps or miles you need to return to.

Dr. Amy Fee, DPT, OCS, ATC, CSCS is a board-certified orthopedic specialist, a certified athletic trainer and a certified strength and conditioning specialist. She has spent 24 years as Team Physiotherapist for Santa Monica Rugby Club, so return-to-play decisions are part of her every week. When you are ready for the next step, sports performance training  carries you on from rehab to peak performance, and concussion therapy covers head injuries.

I've never felt more comfortable working through my concussion recovery with Amy. The length that Amy is willing to go to make sure that I am 100% ready to return back to my rugby training is something I fully appreciate. I've also worked with Kim on body-specific rehabilitation and Kim is truly an expert in what she does and truly care about the long term strengthening and development of my body! Thank you WWR for keeping me in one piece!

Amy has been the team physio for Santa Monica Rugby Club for 20 years, treating a raft of injuries and working to achieve players' rehabilitation goals while emphasizing prevention. I am retired now, and Amy is also our go-to therapist for me and my non-rugby playing family members because of her skilled and healing approach. Her Sunset Park neighborhood practice is well-equipped, and the staff are fabulous.

How we work

From injury to full training, stage by stage

Getting back to your sport is the goal. Staying there is how we measure good rehab.

Settle the injury

Early on we calm pain and swelling and protect the healing tissue, with hands-on treatment and the right amount of movement for where you are in your recovery.

Restore movement

Range of motion comes back first, then balance and neuromuscular control, so the joint moves the way your sport asks it to.

Rebuild strength and power

Strength and conditioning work builds up the injured area and everything around it. It progresses from controlled exercise to speed, jumping and change of direction.

Sport-specific retraining

The final stage looks like your sport: cutting and sprinting for soccer, contact preparation for rugby, a mileage build-up for runners. We keep progressing it until full training feels routine.

Return to play with clear criteria

You go back when you meet measurable targets for strength, movement and sport-specific tests. With your permission, we share the plan with your coach, athletic trainer or surgeon so everyone works to the same timeline.

Working alongside your surgeon

After surgery we follow your surgeon's protocol and keep them updated on your progress, using the latest clinical research to get the most from every stage.

Common questions about sports rehabilitation

A few things worth knowing before your first visit. Anything not covered here, call (310) 393-1703 and ask.
In most cases you can book directly. California's direct access law lets you start physical therapy without a physician's referral for up to 12 visits or 45 calendar days. Medicare and some PPO plans have their own rules, and we check this with you when you call.
As early as you can. An early assessment gets the right treatment started and gives you a realistic timeline for your season. Most patients are seen within 24 to 48 hours of getting in touch.
Your first visit, the evaluation, runs 55 to 60 minutes. Follow-up sessions run 40 to 55 minutes. A typical course is 6 to 24 or more sessions, depending on the injury and the level you are returning to.
Yes. We follow your surgeon's post-operative protocol and keep them updated. With your permission, we share your return-to-play plan with your coach or trainer.
When you meet clear return-to-play targets for strength, movement and sport-specific tests. We build up to it in stages, so by the time you return, full training already feels familiar.
Anyone who wants to get back to an active life after an injury, from competitive rugby and soccer players to weekend runners and gym-goers.
