Expert physical therapy for Santa Monica and the Westside

Physical therapy works as a first-line treatment for most muscle and joint problems. It is clinically proven to reduce pain and dysfunction, and it usually costs less than the imaging-and-surgery route people expect to end up on.

Only qualified, licensed physical therapists can provide it. At our Ocean Park Blvd clinic every session is one-to-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy, and you leave your first visit with treatment already underway and a plan to work on at home.

Dr. Amy Fee, DPT, OCS, ATC, CSCS has been helping Santa Monica athletes and families move, recover and perform at their best for close to 25 years, including 24 years as Team Physiotherapist for Santa Monica Rugby Club. Alongside orthopedic physical therapy, the clinic offers sports rehabilitation, dry needling, concussion therapy and vestibular rehabilitation, so your care can evolve with you from injury and recovery through return to sport and long-term performance.

Who we treat

We work with people of all ages and activity levels, from athletes chasing peak performance to people who simply want to move and feel better.

  • Runners and cyclists along the beach path
  • Rugby, soccer, volleyball and other athletes looking to recover, perform and stay healthy
  • Office professionals dealing with neck, back and postural pain
  • Patients recovering from orthopedic surgery or injury
  • Pregnant and postnatal patients navigating the physical changes of pregnancy and recovery
  • Weekend warriors and active adults who want to keep doing what they love
  • Anyone whose body has stopped doing what it used to do and wants to get back to moving with strength, confidence and longevity

I've never felt more comfortable working through my concussion recovery with Amy. The length that Amy is willing to go to make sure that I am 100% ready to return back to my rugby training is something I fully appreciate. I've also worked with Kim on body-specific rehabilitation and Kim is truly an expert in what she does and truly care about the long term strengthening and development of my body! Thank you WWR for keeping me in one piece!

Amy has been the team physio for Santa Monica Rugby Club for 20 years, treating a raft of injuries and working to achieve players' rehabilitation goals while emphasizing prevention. I am retired now, and Amy is also our go-to therapist for me and my non-rugby playing family members because of her skilled and healing approach. Her Sunset Park neighborhood practice is well-equipped, and the staff are fabulous.

How we work

Physical therapy that treats the cause, not just the sore spot

The knee that hurts is often not the thing that's wrong. We look at how you move, then fix what's driving the pain.

A full assessment first

Every course of treatment starts with a proper evaluation. We look at how the joint moves, what the surrounding muscles are doing, your strength, your balance, and how the problem area behaves when you load it. Pain in one place frequently traces back to weakness or stiffness somewhere else, and treating only the sore spot is how injuries keep coming back.

Exercise that fits your week

The home program is short and specific. A handful of movements that target what your assessment found, not a generic list. Most patients spend a few minutes a day on it, and we adjust it every visit as you get stronger, so you are never grinding through exercises that stopped being useful three weeks ago.

Hands-on treatment, not a photocopied sheet

Treatment combines manual therapy with a plan you actually follow. Depending on the injury that can mean soft tissue work, joint mobilization, dry needling for stubborn muscle tension, or cupping. The passive work gets you comfortable enough to move. The active work is what makes the result stick.

Built for getting back to activity

For athletes and active patients, getting out of pain is only half the job. The clinic's sports rehabilitation and performance training take you from moving without pain to moving well under load, with return-to-play criteria rather than a vague sense that you probably feel fine now. For recovery between sessions, patients can use NormaTec compression and biofeedback.

Common questions about physical therapy in Santa Monica

A few things worth knowing before your first visit. Anything not covered here, call (310) 393-1703 and ask.
In most cases, no. California's direct access law lets you start physical therapy with a licensed physical therapist without a physician's referral, for up to 12 visits or 45 calendar days, whichever comes first. Beyond that, a physician, surgeon or podiatrist needs to examine you and sign off on your plan of care before treatment continues. That appointment can be in person or by telehealth.

So you don't need to wait for a doctor's appointment before getting your injury or movement problem evaluated. We can carry out an initial evaluation, identify what's going on within our scope of practice, build you a plan, and tell you whether physical therapy is the right fit for your condition.

We're also trained to recognize what falls outside physical therapy. During your evaluation we screen for signs and symptoms that may need further medical assessment, and if anything raises concern we'll refer you or coordinate with the right provider. Knowing what we can treat, what we can't, and when you need another set of expert eyes is part of good care.

Two exceptions on referrals. Medicare requires a formal physician referral before you start. Some private PPO policies have their own rules and may still require one for reimbursement. We check this with you when you call.
Most patients get an appointment within 24 to 48 hours of getting in touch.
An initial evaluation runs 55 to 60 minutes. We assess how you move, where the pain sits and what triggers it. You always leave with something to work on, whether that's an exercise, a stretch, a posture change or a modification, plus treatment on the day where it's appropriate. Follow-up visits run 40 to 55 minutes.
Anywhere from 6 to 24 or more, depending on how severe the problem is, how you respond to treatment, any other conditions involved, and whether surgery was part of the picture. Neck pain from a bad desk setup might need a workstation change, some postural work and manual therapy. An ACL reconstruction runs through a full return-to-sport protocol with milestones at each phase. We give you an honest estimate after your first assessment.

Comfortable clothing that lets us get to the area we're treating. Tennis shoes are the best option.
Yes. The clinic is street level and accessible for patients with mobility difficulties.
