What a concussion is

A concussion is a brain injury caused by acceleration or deceleration of the brain within the skull. It follows a significant impact to the head or elsewhere on the body. The impact causes a biochemical imbalance within the brain cells, which reduces blood flow and creates a temporary energy deficit. Symptoms can include loss of consciousness, headache, pressure in the head, neck pain, nausea or vomiting, dizziness and balance problems. For an in-depth whiteboard explanation, watch the video from Dr. Cameron Marshall (@Concussion_Doc) of CCMI.

I've never felt more comfortable working through my concussion recovery with Amy. The length that Amy is willing to go to make sure that I am 100% ready to return back to my rugby training is something I fully appreciate. I've also worked with Kim on body-specific rehabilitation and Kim is truly an expert in what she does and truly care about the long term strengthening and development of my body! Thank you WWR for keeping me in one piece!

Amy has been the team physio for Santa Monica Rugby Club for 20 years, treating a raft of injuries and working to achieve players' rehabilitation goals while emphasizing prevention. I am retired now, and Amy is also our go-to therapist for me and my non-rugby playing family members because of her skilled and healing approach. Her Sunset Park neighborhood practice is well-equipped, and the staff are fabulous.

How we work

How we manage concussion recovery

The first days after a concussion shape how the rest of the recovery goes. Here is how we guide it.

Early assessment

See a healthcare professional trained in concussion management as soon as possible after the injury. Recent studies show that one of the best predictors of recovery is how quickly you are assessed at a concussion clinic.

Relative rest, then gradual activity

A period of relative "symptom-limited" physical and cognitive rest is generally recommended for the first 24 to 48 hours. After that, mental and physical activity increases gradually, directed and supervised by a licensed practitioner trained in concussion management.

Active treatment for lasting symptoms

If symptoms last beyond 7 to 10 days, we start an individual treatment and rehabilitation program. Evidence supports early specific cardio exercise, visual and vestibular rehabilitation, treatment for the neck and whiplash, dietary and supplement recommendations, and patient education.

A team around the athlete

We use standardized assessment tools to evaluate cognitive function, eye movement and brainstem function. We work closely with athletes, coaches and healthcare providers, and we teach athletes and their families about concussion awareness, management and prevention.

As soon as possible. Studies show that early assessment at a concussion clinic is one of the best predictors of recovery. Most patients get an appointment within 24 to 48 hours of getting in touch.
In most cases you can book directly. California's direct access law lets you start physical therapy without a physician's referral for up to 12 visits or 45 calendar days. Medicare and some PPO plans have their own rules, and we check this with you when you call.
Baseline testing measures balance, reaction time, visual processing and cognitive function while you are healthy. If you are concussed later, we compare your results against it. We recommend it for athletes in contact sports, with a re-test every year.
Many people feel better within 7 to 10 days. If symptoms last longer, we start an individual rehabilitation program aimed at the cause of each symptom, which differs from one patient to the next.
Once you are symptom-free at rest and pass exertional and post-injury testing against your baseline. We guide each stage of the return and share the plan with your coach or school.
Yes. Sub-symptom threshold exercise and vestibular, visual and neck rehabilitation are built for persistent symptoms.
